The Blizzard of 1978 started it!

In January 1978, a couple feet of snow stranded an Amtrak passenger train just north of Bainbridge, Indiana. Volunteer Fire Department members were called upon to rescue the passengers, evaluate and treat them, and find local families to provide accommodations for several nights. This experience highlighted the need for a new town snowplow, among other items. Residents banded together to fundraise, and the nonprofit Bainbridge Improvement Society came out of that effort.

Today, BIS (pronounced Biz) operates with a simple mission: to strengthen the community through service and fellowship. The volunteer-led organization actively fosters connections among residents through a series of engaging social events and manages the Bainbridge Community Building, a key gathering place in northern Putnam County.

BIS believes in inclusivity. Membership is open to all who live, work, do business or care about someone in Bainbridge and wish to see the town thrive.
